The meaning
What Zakat al-Mal means in Islam
It is distinguished from zakat al-fitr, the small fixed measure of food given per person at the end of Ramadan. It falls due on cash, gold, silver, trade stock and recoverable debts once they pass the nisab and a lunar year has turned, while crops, livestock and mined wealth have their own rates and no year requirement. Your home, personal belongings and the tools of your trade are exempt. Scholars differ over pensions, shares, and gold jewellery in regular use.
