The meaning

What Mut'ah means in Islam

Sunni scholars hold it was allowed early in Islam and then abolished by the Prophet, with reports placing the final prohibition at Khaybar or at the conquest of Makkah, and 'Umar's public ban is widely cited alongside them. Twelver Shia jurists hold the permission was never abrogated, and regulate mut'ah as a contract with a stated term and a stated dower. The same word has an unrelated sense in Sunni fiqh: a consolation payment made to a divorced wife.
