The meaning

What Zakat al-Fitr means in Islam

The Prophet made it obligatory on every Muslim, young and old, free and owned, as a purification for the fasting person and food for the poor. The measure is one sa', roughly two and a half to three kilograms of the local staple. Hanafis permit paying its value in money, which most charities now do; the other schools generally require the food itself. Given after the Eid prayer it counts as ordinary charity, so it is paid early.
