The meaning

What Hudud means in Islam

The singular is hadd, a limit; the name comes from the Qur'an's phrase the limits of Allah, which it uses more widely. Jurists usually count between four and seven: theft, zina, false accusation of zina, highway robbery, and for most, drinking wine and apostasy. The evidence required is deliberately near impossible, four upright eyewitnesses to the act itself in zina, and a settled maxim holds that hudud are averted by any doubt. Confessions may be withdrawn, and the classical record shows these penalties were rarely carried out.
