The meaning

What Tariqah means in Islam

The word means path. Well known orders include the Qadiriyyah, the Naqshbandiyyah, the Shadhiliyyah and the Chishtiyyah, each with its own wird and manners. Belonging to one has never been a requirement in Islam, and scholars differ sharply about the orders as institutions, some treating them as a school of character, others objecting to particular practices found within them. The word is not used in this sense outside Sufi circles.
