The meaning

What Maqam means in Islam

In that literature a maqam is a stage the traveller reaches and holds by effort, such as repentance, patience or reliance, while a hal is a state that comes over the heart and passes, such as a moment of intense longing. The lists and their order differ from author to author. Outside Sufi writing the same qualities are discussed without this ranking.
