The meaning
What Talaq means in Islam
The Qur'an gives it a whole surah and sets out a careful procedure: a single pronouncement, then a waiting period during which the couple may simply resume, with two further chances before the separation becomes final. Three pronouncements in one sitting are counted as three by the majority and as one by a minority, and this is among the oldest live disputes in fiqh. A woman who wishes to end a marriage uses khul' or asks a judge for faskh instead.
