What Tabi' at-Tabi'in means in Islam
Malik ibn Anas, Sufyan ath-Thawri, al-Awza'i, Shu'bah and Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak stand in this layer. It is the generation in which the schools of law took shape and hadith began to be gathered into books rather than carried in memory alone. Together with the Companions and the Followers they make up the salaf, the three generations of praise.
