The meaning
What Sunan means in Islam
The four Sunan among the six books are those of Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, and in its own way al-Tirmidhi. Unlike the two Sahihs they include weak reports, usually with a remark, because their purpose is to lay out the evidence on each legal question rather than to collect only what is sound. Reading them well means reading the author's comments, not only the texts.
