Umm Waraqah · a Light

He appointed a caller to prayer for her household

Umm Waraqah bint Abdullah of the Ansar had collected the Qur'an, and the Prophet ﷺ used to visit her at her house and called her the martyr. The report in the Sunan of Abu Dawud says that he appointed a mu'adhdhin for her and instructed her to lead the people of her household in prayer. Scholars have argued over it for centuries, both about the chain and about whether her household included men, and the schools reach different conclusions on women leading prayer as a result. She was killed at home by two of her servants during the caliphate of Umar, which is why the title he had given her was remembered.
