The meaning
What Asbab an-Nuzul means in Islam
Knowing the occasion often makes a verse click into place, and it guards against reading a narrow ruling as a sweeping one. These occasions reach us only through narrations, so they are weighed like any report, and a great many verses have no occasion attached at all. The working rule for most scholars is that the lesson lies in the general wording, not in the particular incident.
