The meaning
What Hijrah to Abyssinia means in Islam
It happened in two waves, years before the move to Madinah. The Prophet sent them to the Negus, whom he described as a king under whom nobody is wronged. Quraysh sent envoys with gifts to demand them back; Ja'far ibn Abi Talib answered by describing what they had been and what Islam made of them, then recited from Surah Maryam, and the king wept and refused to hand them over. Some stayed until after Khaybar.
