The account
Daughter of Utbah; her father, uncle, and brother all fell at Badr, a grief she converted into the vengeance of Uhud, hiring Wahshi against Hamza and mutilating the martyr. At the Opening she came veiled among the pledging women, and answered the Prophet's ﷺ terms with the sharp tongue that never left her: does a free woman commit zina?, and on theft, her husband Abu Sufyan pardoned in advance. Accepted, she said: "O Messenger of Allah, no household on earth was more hateful to me than yours, and now no household is more beloved." At Yarmuk she stood in the women's line breaking the retreat. Islam's door, the Codex notes, was wide enough for the woman of Uhud.
