A desperate mother's seven crossings became a pillar of pilgrimage: the only footsteps ritualized forever.
The account
Two low hills flank the valley of the House, and between them runs the only choreography in worship copied from a woman in crisis. When the water skin emptied and the infant Isma'il writhed, Hajar climbed as-Safa scanning the valley, crossed to al-Marwah, and back, seven times, until the answer broke from the ground under the angel's strike. The Prophet ﷺ sealed the memory: "may Allah have mercy on the mother of Isma'il" (Bukhari 3364).
Revelation ratified her footsteps into law: "indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah" (2:158); every pilgrim's sa'i walks her exact route, and the men jog the stretch where she ran. From as-Safa's top the Prophet later made his first public call, asking Makkah if they would believe a raider behind the hill, and receiving the answer his character had already earned: we have never known a lie from you. One hill holds the run of a trusting mother, the other the cry of a trusted son; between them, the religion says, walk.
