The account

Only a handful of created things receive the honor of a divine oath; this mountain opens a surah with one: "By at-Tur" (52:1), and stands inside another: "by the fig and the olive, and Mount Sinin" (95:1-2). At its side Musa saw the fire and heard, in the valley of Tuwa, the address every muwahhid memorizes: "indeed, I am Allah; there is no god but Me" (20:14).

Here he returned for the forty nights, received the Tablets "in whose inscription is guidance and mercy," and made the request that measured all requests: show me. "You will not see Me; but look at the mountain." The manifestation came to the summit and leveled it, and Musa fell unconscious (7:143). The mount kept later appointments too: raised over Bani Israel as a canopy for the covenant (2:63), and appointed in Muslim 2937 as the refuge where Isa will shelter the believers while the hordes pass. What Sinai could not withstand, the Codex notes at its final tile, the people of Jannah will be granted at home.
