Waters & Valleys · Water standing at attention

البحر المفلوق

The Parted Sea

Struck once with a staff: each side a mountain, a nation between them, and the pursuit sealed behind.

The account

At the dead end of the exodus, army behind and water ahead, the panicked arithmetic of Bani Israel ("we are surely overtaken") met Musa's certainty: "no indeed; my Lord is with me; He will guide me" (26:62). The command was one strike of the staff, and the physics of the planet stepped aside: "it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain" (26:63), corridors of seabed walled with standing water.

A nation crossed between the water-walls; the pursuit entered the same corridors and received the other half of the miracle: the walls dismissed. "And We drowned the others" (26:66). Pharaoh's last-second faith was refused; his body was kept as a sign. The Prophet ﷺ bound this water into the ummah's calendar on arrival in Madinah: finding Ashura fasted for the deliverance, he said "we have more right to Musa than you," fasted it, and commanded it (Bukhari 2004). Every Ashura fast since is this sea's anniversary. The Codex keeps the site unnamed on the map, as the Book left it: the coordinates that matter are "my Lord is with me," reachable from anywhere.
