The account
Two of the Qur'an's longest dramas play out on Egypt's stage. Yusuf entered it in chains from the caravan, survived its palace and its prison, and rose over "the storehouses of the land" (12:55) to feed the region through seven locked years; his family's migration at his invitation planted Bani Israel by the Nile. Generations later the hospitality had become a machinery of infanticide: "Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and made its people factions" (28:4).
Egypt then hosted the longest argument between heaven and a throne: nine signs, the duel of the magicians in which the professionals prostrated first, the plagues, and the night flight that ended at the sea. The estate transfer was recorded with the coldness of a deed: "how many gardens and springs they left behind… thus We caused another people to inherit them" (44:25-28). The Prophet ﷺ later commended Egypt to his ummah by kinship and covenant: be good to its people, "for they have protection (dhimmah) and kinship" (Muslim 2543), Hajar and Maryam's ties running through it. Opened under Amr ibn al-As, it became a fortress of the religion, as it had been a fortress against it.
