The meaning

What Wajib means in Islam

For Malikis, Shafi'is and Hanbalis, wajib and fard are two words for one category. Hanafis separate them: the witr prayer and the sacrifice at Eid al-Adha are wajib rather than fard, so neglecting them is sinful while denying them is not disbelief. In hajj the distinction has a practical edge, since a missed wajib can be repaired by a sacrifice while a missed pillar cannot.
