The meaning

What Diyah means in Islam

The Qur'an prescribes it for accidental killing, alongside the freeing of a slave, and it is also what a family receives when they waive qisas for a deliberate one. The classical measure is one hundred camels, which jurists converted into gold, silver or currency, with fixed fractions for the loss of an eye, a hand or a tooth. In the classical rules the payment falls on the killer's kin group, the 'aqilah, an early form of shared insurance.
