Ibn Abbas said the Prophet ﷺ was the most generous of people, and most generous of all in Ramadan, when Jibril used to meet him every night of the month and go through the Qur'an with him. The report sits at the very front of Sahih al-Bukhari, as the sixth hadith in the collection. It is the origin of the tarawih habit of reciting a portion each night until the whole book is finished, and of the practice called mudarasa, in which two people take turns reciting to one another and correcting. The annual review is why Ramadan is a month of recitation and not only a month of hunger.
