The meaning

What Raja' means in Islam

The Qur'an forbids despair of Allah's mercy and says He forgives all sins (Qur'an 39:53). Scholars separate raja' from wishful thinking, tamanni: hope plants and then expects a crop, wishing expects a crop with no seed. A common counsel is to keep fear slightly ahead while a person is in health, and to keep hope ahead when death is near.
