The meaning

What Hafiz means in Islam

In everyday speech today hafiz means someone who has memorised the Qur'an, and that use is fine. In hadith books it is a technical rank above muhaddith, given to men like Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, who is often called simply al-Hafiz. The word means one who guards something.
