The account
Quraysh's finest orator, sent to negotiate Hudaybiyyah, where he refused the words "Messenger of Allah" on the document and pressed every hard clause, including the return of his own son Abu Jandal, dragged back in chains. Umar, enraged that day, would later say: I kept giving charity and fasting for fear of that speech of mine. Suhayl accepted Islam at the Opening, and when the Prophet ﷺ died and Makkah swayed toward apostasy, the old negotiator stood at the Kaaba and held the city with a speech in the spirit of as-Siddiq's in Madinah: whoever worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad has died; whoever worships Allah, Allah is Living. The tongue once hired against Islam became its anchor, exactly as the Prophet had foretold to Umar: "Perhaps he will stand a station that will please you."
