Hanzala ibn Abi Amir
Ran from his wedding night to Uhud, and the angels performed his ghusl.
The account
Married the night before Uhud, he heard the call at dawn and left before the ritual bath, plunging into the battle until he was killed. The Prophet ﷺ told the companions: "I saw the angels washing Hanzala between the sky and the earth with the water of the clouds in vessels of silver." They asked his wife, who told of the night, and the ummah gave him his eternal name: Ghasil al-Mala'ikah, the one washed by the angels. Son of Madinah's chief enemy monk, he chose his own line. The report is carried in the classical sirah and graded sound by its collectors (Ibn Hibban, al-Hakim). No image of martyrdom in the Seerah is more tender: heaven completing the sunnah the groom had no time for.
