Missed Badr, vowed Allah would see what he would do, and was found with eighty wounds.
The account
He missed Badr and it burned him: "If Allah grants me a battle with His Messenger, Allah will see what I do." At Uhud, when the lines collapsed and men sat down in despair, he walked forward past them: "O Sa'd, Jannah! By the Lord of an-Nadr, I smell its fragrance from beyond Uhud", and fought until they found him with more than eighty wounds of sword, spear, and arrow, his body known only to his sister by his fingertips. The companions held that the verse descended about him and his like: "Among the believers are men true to what they pledged to Allah" (33:23). Uncle of Anas ibn Malik, and the standing definition of making up a missed opportunity.
