Companions · Commander of the fifty archers
عبد الله بن جبير
Abdullah ibn Jubayr
Held the hill at Uhud with ten men after forty left, and died at his post.
The account
The Prophet ﷺ set him over the fifty archers on the hill at Uhud with the order that decided the day: "Do not leave your position even if you see the birds snatching us." When victory glittered and forty of his men descended for the spoils, Abdullah ibn Jubayr stood in the gap quoting his orders, and held the ridge with ten, against Khalid's wheeling cavalry, until every one of them fell. He obeyed the letter of a command whose wisdom the disobedient learned within the hour. In the Codex he stands for every guardian of an unglamorous post: the reward of the hill is not measured by the crowd that left it.
