آدم

Adam

The first man, the first prophet

Created by Allah's two hands, taught the names of all things, father of humanity.

The story

Before there was history there was a announcement: 'I am placing upon the earth a successor' (2:30). The angels asked about bloodshed; Allah answered with knowledge. He created Adam from clay, breathed into him of His spirit, and taught him the names of all things, a knowledge the angels themselves did not carry. When they were commanded to prostrate to him, all obeyed except Iblis, whose refusal, born of pride, opened the oldest war in creation.

Adam lived in the Garden with his wife Hawwa, free in all of it except one tree. The whisperer swore he was a sincere adviser, and the two ate. What happened next is the heart of the human story: they did not argue, they did not blame their Lord. They said the sentence every child of theirs has needed since: 'Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves' (7:23). Adam received words from his Lord, and his Lord turned to him. He descended to the earth not as a punishment without hope but as a successor beginning his work.

Every funeral, every repentance, every human face carries his inheritance. The Qur'an insists on the likeness: 'The example of Isa in the sight of Allah is like that of Adam: He created him from dust' (3:59). Dignity, slip, return. That is the pattern, and it began with him.

The Qur'an on it

And He taught Adam the names, all of them: the knowledge that silenced the angels' question.

Qur'an 2:31

'Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves; if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.' The first repentance.

Qur'an 7:23

Adam received words from his Lord, and He turned to him in forgiveness. Mercy is older than history.

Qur'an 2:37

'We had made a covenant with Adam before, but he forgot; and We found in him no firm resolve.' Tender honesty about our father.

Qur'an 20:115

Isa's creation is likened to Adam's: from dust, then 'Be', and he was.

Qur'an 3:59

The narrations

The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday: on it Adam was created, on it he was admitted into the Garden, and on it he was expelled from it.

Sahih Muslim

On the Day of Resurrection the believers will come to Adam and say: you are the father of mankind; Allah created you with His hand, and made the angels prostrate to you.

Sahih al-Bukhari
