The story
Between Adam and Nuh the Qur'an lights one lamp by name: Idris. It gives him two titles, siddiq, a man of unbroken truthfulness, and nabi, a prophet, and then one breathtaking line: 'We raised him to a lofty station' (19:57). The commentators speak of him as among the first to write with the pen, to observe the stars, to sew garments; the Qur'an itself keeps his file short and luminous.
In the ascension through the heavens, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ met him in the fourth heaven and was greeted by him as a righteous brother. A man of the world's morning, still awake, still greeting the last of the line. Patience is his signature: the Qur'an lists him with Ismail and Dhul-Kifl, 'all were of the patient' (21:85).
