The account

Uhud walls Madinah's north in red granite, and carries a testimonial no other landform holds: "this is a mountain that loves us, and we love it" (Bukhari 4083, Muslim 1365). The Prophet ﷺ said it returning from campaign, when the sight of Uhud meant home.

At its feet the ummah took its bitterest early lesson: the archers' hill abandoned, Hamza and seventy martyrs buried where they fell, in the graves the city still visits with salam. On its slopes the Prophet bled, and his tooth broke, and Talha's hand took the arrows meant for his face. Once, the mountain itself shook beneath the four it carried, and was told: "be firm, Uhud, for upon you are a prophet, a siddiq, and two martyrs" (Bukhari 3675), a sentence that quietly foretold how Umar and Uthman would die. The Prophet fixed its size as the ummah's unit of moral measure: gold equal to Uhud would not settle what a companion's handful of deeds weighs, and Ibn Mas'ud's two shins outweigh it on the Scale.
