Al-Muhaymin

The Guardian who watches over all

The essay

Al-Muhaymin is the guardian who is over the thing, not beside it. The Qur'an uses the same word of itself in relation to the scriptures before it: standing over them as witness and criterion. Applied to Him it gathers three things at once: He sees all of it, He preserves all of it, He has authority over all of it. A watchman who cannot act is only a spectator; a ruler who cannot see rules blind. Here nothing is missing.

In the Qur'an

He is Allah, other than whom there is no god: the King, the Most Holy, the Peace, the Giver of Security, the Guardian over all, the Almighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. Glory be to Allah, far above all they set beside Him.
