Al-Mu'min

The Granter of Security

The essay

The same root gives us faith and safety, and that is not an accident of language. Al-Mu'min is the One who gives security, and also the One who confirms the truth of what He has said, who stands behind His own promise the way a guarantor stands behind a debt. Faith in Arabic is not primarily an opinion about the unseen; it is entering into safety with someone who has given His word. He never breaks it, and the whole structure rests there.

In the Qur'an

He is Allah, other than whom there is no god: the King, the Most Holy, the Peace, the Giver of Security, the Guardian over all, the Almighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. Glory be to Allah, far above all they set beside Him.

What it asks of you

Where you are afraid, name the thing precisely, then ask whether it can reach past Him to get to you. Most fears do not survive being stated out loud in front of this Name.
