Makkah · a Light

The year he lost his wife and his uncle

Around 619 CE, in the space of a few months, the Prophet ﷺ lost Khadijah, who had been his wife for some twenty five years and his first believer, and Abu Talib, the uncle whose clan protection had kept him alive in Makkah. The sources call it the Year of Sorrow. The exact year is usually given as 619 and sometimes as 620. With the protection gone he went to Ta'if to look for support and was driven out by a crowd that stoned him until his sandals filled with blood, and he returned to a city where he could now be attacked openly. The migration to Madinah followed about three years later.
