Makkah · a Light

The city that expelled him was told to go home

In Ramadan of the eighth year after the migration, 630 CE, the Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah with a large force and the city fell with very little fighting. He had been driven out of it eight years earlier and members of his family had been killed by people now standing in front of him. According to the accounts he asked what they expected, was told they expected good from a generous brother, and said: go, you are free. A general amnesty followed, with a short list of exceptions, most of whom were also pardoned. Bilal, who had been tortured in that city as a slave, climbed onto the roof of the Ka'ba and called the prayer.
