Madinah · a Light

The first mosque was built by hand at Quba

When the Prophet ﷺ reached the outskirts of Yathrib in 622, he stopped for several days at Quba, a settlement of palm groves south of the town, and a mosque was built there before he went on. It was a simple enclosure of palm trunks and mud brick, and the reports describe him carrying stones for it himself. The commentators generally identify it with the mosque the Qur'an calls founded on God consciousness from the first day. He kept visiting it after moving into the town, and the practice of going out to Quba on a Saturday is recorded from him. The building on the site now is modern. The foundation date is not.
