A mountain the Prophet said loves us and we love it

Uhud is a red granite ridge a few kilometres north of the Prophet's mosque, running for several kilometres and standing apart from the ranges around it, which is where its name, meaning single or alone, is usually traced. The battle fought at its foot in 625 cost the Muslims about seventy dead, among them the Prophet's uncle Hamza, after archers left the small hill they had been told to hold. That hill, Jabal al-Rumat, is still there, a rise of a few metres beside the cemetery of the fallen. Bukhari and Muslim record the Prophet ﷺ saying of it that this is a mountain that loves us and we love it.
