A verse about nearness sits inside the rules on fasting

Surah al-Baqarah gives the law of Ramadan in a short run of verses: who must fast, who is excused, what to do when ill or travelling, when the fast begins and when it ends. In the middle of that legal passage, at verse 186, the register changes completely. When My servants ask you about Me, I am near. I answer the call of the caller when he calls Me. There is no intermediary in the sentence and no instruction to go through anyone, and unlike most answers in the Qur'an it does not begin with the command to say. It is set between rules about food and rules about the first light.
