Peace · a Light
Islam and peace and the greeting share three letters
The root s l m carries wholeness, soundness, being intact. From it come salam, peace, and the greeting exchanged between Muslims; salim, sound and unbroken, as in the sound heart that the Qur'an says is the only thing worth arriving with; istislam, surrender; and islam itself, which is the act of handing something over whole. Al-Salam is one of the names of God listed at the end of Surah al-Hashr. A Muslim is one who gives himself over, and the word for what he gives and the word for the state he is meant to reach are built from one skeleton. The greeting is the religion's own name, conjugated.
