Human Nature · a Light
The word for human nature also means breaking a fast
The root f t r means to split open, to cleave. From it comes fatir, the originator, used as a name of God and as the title of chapter 35, the one who splits creation into being out of nothing. From it also comes iftar, the breaking of the fast at sunset, which splits the day's abstention in two. And from it comes fitrah, the original pattern on which people were made, named in Surah al-Rum: the fitrah of Allah, upon which He originated mankind, with no altering of the creation of Allah. The same three letters carry the first act of creation and the meal a fasting person eats at dusk.
