What Tafsir bi'l-Ma'thur means in Islam

Transmitted tafsir explains the Qur'an by the Qur'an, then by the Sunnah, then by the Companions and their students. Reasoned tafsir uses grammar, context and legal principle; it is praised when it is disciplined and condemned when it is a person reading their preferences into the text. Most of the great commentaries mix the two rather than holding to one.
