The meaning
What Gharib al-Qur'an means in Islam
Arabic shifts over time, and words that were everyday in the seventh century can be obscure now. Ibn Abbas is known for explaining such words by citing lines of pre Islamic poetry. Al-Raghib al-Isfahani's Mufradat is the standard reference and is still the first book a student opens on a hard word.
