The meaning

What Amanah means in Islam

The Qur'an commands rendering trusts back to those they belong to. Legally, someone holding an amanah is not liable for loss that occurs without negligence, which is what separates a deposit from a loan or from property seized. The word is also used morally, for the trust of life, of knowledge and of public office, and its opposite is khiyanah, betrayal, which the Prophet named among the signs of hypocrisy.
