Mu'adh ibn Jabal

The account

Mu'adh ibn Jabal of the Ansar pledged at Aqabah as a teenager and became the young man the Prophet ﷺ seated behind him on the mount to teach tawhid: do you know the right of Allah upon His servants? He ﷺ said: "The most knowledgeable of my ummah in halal and haram is Mu'adh ibn Jabal," and told him plainly: "O Mu'adh, by Allah I love you; do not leave off saying after every prayer: O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You well." The ummah still says it.

Sent as judge and teacher to Yemen, he received at his departure the methodology of Islamic law in three questions: by what will you judge? The Book of Allah. If you do not find it? The Sunnah. If you do not find it? I will strive with my own reasoning, and the Prophet struck his chest with approval. On the road the Prophet gave him the summary of the whole path: the head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is the prayer, and its peak is jihad; then he held his tongue: restrain this. Mu'adh died young in the plague of Amwas in Sham, asking his Lord for his family's share of the epidemic like a bride's gift.
