The Fish of Musa and the Servant
A dead fish revived in a basket and swam out through a tunnel of sea: the only compass heaven ever gave.
The account
Musa was assigned a teacher he could find only by coordinates no map carries: the junction of the two seas, marked by a sign that would perform itself. Take a fish in a basket, he was told; where you lose it, there he is. At the rock, while Musa slept, the salted fish stirred, slid to the water, "and took its way into the sea, tunneling" (18:61), the Qur'an describing the water holding a dry corridor around its path, sarabah, like an arch.
The young companion, Yusha per the tradition, saw it and forgot to report it until a day's hunger later: "did you see, when we took shelter at the rock? I forgot the fish, and none made me forget it but Shaytan; and it took its way into the sea, amazingly" (18:63). Musa's answer is the traveler's cry of recognition: "that is what we were seeking" (18:64), and they retraced their footsteps to find al-Khidr at the rock. The Codex places the fish where the story places it: revelation sometimes marks its meeting places not with addresses but with small resurrections, and the servant's part is to notice where the miracle happened and walk back to it.
