The Cow of Bani Israel
One simple command, inflated by questions into a rare golden specimen; the surah of the whole Shari'ah bears her name.
The account
A man of Bani Israel was murdered for an inheritance, and the town traded accusations. The command through Musa was one line: "Allah commands you to slaughter a cow" (2:67). Any cow. Instead of obedience came questions: what is she? what color? they all look alike to us. Each question narrowed the specification, until the open command had become a scavenger hunt for a golden heifer, unyoked, unblemished, pleasing to beholders, which they purchased, the tafsir records, for a fortune, "and they almost did not do it" (2:71).
Then the point: strike the dead man with part of it, "thus Allah gives life to the dead and shows you His signs" (2:73). The victim rose, named his killer, and the case closed with resurrection entered into evidence. The Prophet's ﷺ standing rule reads like this story's summary: "what I have forbidden you, avoid; what I have commanded you, do as much as you can; those before you were destroyed by their many questions." The longest surah of the Qur'an, the surah of law itself, is named al-Baqarah after the cow that taught the first rule of law: the command you question into complexity was simple when it arrived.
