Umm Sulaym bint Milhan of Madinah was widowed with a small son, Anas, whom she sent to serve the Prophet ﷺ. When Abu Talha, then still a pagan, proposed to her, she told him she would not refuse a man like him, but that she could not marry an unbeliever, and that if he accepted Islam that would be her dowry and she would ask for nothing else. He did, and the marriage went ahead. The report is preserved by an-Nasa'i and others, and early scholars cite it in the chapters on what may count as a valid dower. She went out at Hunayn while pregnant, carrying a dagger, and told him she was keeping it for anyone who came near her.
