The Prophet's confidant on the hypocrites, and the lone scout of the Confederates' camp.
The account
The Prophet ﷺ entrusted Hudhayfah alone with the names of the hypocrites, Umar himself would ask him whether he was on the list. On the freezing night of the Khandaq, when the Prophet asked who would bring news of the enemy and the hunger-worn camp fell silent, he named Hudhayfah, who slipped among the Confederates as the storm tore their pots and tents, heard Abu Sufyan order the retreat, and returned with the news of the siege's collapse. He asked the Prophet about the evil that follows good and about the callers at the gates of Jahannam: one companion keeping watch ahead for the whole ummah. He supervised Uthman's unification of the mushaf.
