The account
The strangest witness statement in the canon, told by Tamim ad-Dari, a Christian sailor who became Muslim, and then retold by the Prophet ﷺ from the minbar because it confirmed what he had been teaching (Muslim 2942). Storm-driven for a month, Tamim's crew landed on an island where "a beast of abundant hair, they knew not front from back" met them: "I am al-Jassasah", the gatherer of news, and it directed them to the monastery, where a shackled giant interrogated them: do the palms of Baysan still fruit? does the lake of Tiberias still hold water? has the prophet of the unlettered emerged? Then the declaration: "I am al-Masih (ad-Dajjal), and I am about to be given leave to emerge." The Codex keeps the Jassasah as the canon's eeriest testimony: the last fitnah already exists, already chained, already asking about the water levels.
