The Dog of the Cave
Stretched his forelegs at the cave mouth for three centuries and entered the Qur'an with the friends of God.
The account
When the young monotheists of the generations after Isa fled a city that punished tawhid, a dog followed them to the cave. The Qur'an paints him into the miracle with a guard's posture: "and their dog stretching his forelegs at the threshold" (18:18), keeping the door of a sleep that lasted three hundred years and nine. The same verses describe the staging around him: the sun bending off the cave's mouth, the sleepers turned right and left, an aura of dread that would have filled any intruder with flight.
The scholars drew from his presence a chain of quiet lessons the Codex loves: the companion of the righteous is preserved with them, even a dog; loyalty at a threshold outweighs pedigree; and the Book that records kings forgetting God found room for an animal who stayed. When the town's descendants later argued over the sleepers' number, the Qur'an dismissed the arithmetic and kept the dog in every count they proposed: three and the fourth their dog, five and the sixth their dog, seven and the eighth their dog (18:22). Whatever the census, the dog is in it. Guard something sacred long enough, the tile suggests, and you become part of its story permanently.
