Absent without leave, back with intelligence two empires lacked, and a theology sounder than a kingdom's.
The account
Sulayman inspected the birds and found a gap in the ranks: "why do I not see the hudhud, or is he among the absent?" (27:20). The threat was execution-grade discipline; the defense, when the bird landed, is the Qur'an's most confident opening statement by a subordinate: "I have encompassed what you have not encompassed, and I bring you from Saba certain news" (27:22). A queen, a great throne, a prosperous people, and the flaw his small eye diagnosed at once: "I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah" (27:24), when prostration belongs to "Allah, who brings forth the hidden in the heavens and the earth" (27:25).
Sulayman tested the report with a letter, carried by the same bird: drop it upon them, then withdraw and watch. The chain that ended with an empire's conversion began with one absence justified by reconnaissance. The Codex keeps the hudhud as the patron of every small observer with great news: rank did not see what he saw; and his instinct, on discovering a wrong qiblah, was neither idle gazing nor silence, but to report to the one who could act.
