Kiraman Katibin, The Noble Scribes

“Not a word does he utter but with him is an observer ready.”

The account

Two on every human: "When the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left, not a word does he utter but with him is an observer ready" (50:17-18). The right records the good; the left, the tradition reports, is instructed toward patience, held back while the servant is given time to repent. Deeds are lifted in shifts: "angels of the night and angels of the day succeed one another among you, meeting at Fajr and Asr", and the ascending shift is questioned about how they left His servants: praying, they answer, and praying we found them. The Codex sets them beside the Hisab: the ledgers opened on the Day are being written in this sentence, by readers of it. "And indeed, over you are keepers, noble, writing, they know whatever you do" (82:10-12).
